生須芳英

a1255932054_10生須芳英 aka Namasu Yoshihide is a modern day Japanese musician who makes Japanese sound poetry, experimental, and noise. He’s also part of Japan’s modern day performance art scene, most notably working with Yuuko Haii (who now goes as Youko Heidy).

生須芳英 is known for his awesome sound poetry. Sometimes he does it with no effects, and sometimes he had delay and so on. His voice is awesome and he does great at doing the vocal style of the genre. A mix between talking, ranting, and yelling, at a high speed. He’s known for getting very emotional during his performances, sometimes even to the point of crying. This makes his vocals and performances really stand out and sound awesome. He often also cuts himself on stage. He also does guitar based performances too.

You can watch and listen to stuff below. Sadly, one of my favorite performances by him isn’t on YouTube anymore. It was only a minute long and he walked out completely naked, through down a a bunch of wood that had a knife within it. He picked up the knife and started really fucking up his arm and doing vocals, yelling, crying, stamping his feet. He kept cutting his arm then grabbed onto the blade and held it as hard as possible, the whole side of his body covered in blood.

He has a Bandcamp too

魔ゼルな規犬

魔ゼルな規犬 (Mazelnakiken) is a street performer, sound poet, and musician. He’s part of Japan’s currently ongoing performance art scene, which I’ve posted about before. 魔ゼルな規犬 is both the name of the horse headed guy, real name Daisuke Inoue, and his music “group” which consists of himself, a doll, and every now and then his girlfriend.

魔ゼルな規犬 is known for his extremely fast ranting. His distinct voice sounds awesome with how fast he rants at people on street corners, in parks, outside venues, and so on. He does both street and venue performances, and oddly enough his attire usually changes depending on what kind of performance it is. Usually an all black suit with a non-matching tie for venues then much more casual outfits with flip flops of all things for street performances. I feel its important to point out the flip flops, lots of these performers get arrested or violent responses from the forced audience, wearing shoes that aren’t good for running shows how little he cares about being arrested.

His performances usually consist of walking around, standing, pacing, whatever while ranting and yelling very fast, often amplified. Sometimes he uses props like dildos, big notebooks, his girlfriend, and the doll. He seemingly uses the doll for social commentary, performances where its used he has conversations with the doll while turning the camera on people. Also during venue performances he will often randomly play the drums, often moving his head in a way that suggests its beautiful while he taps the cymbals offbeat.

Surprisingly though, unlike the rest of the scene this dude doesn’t really do noise music. Instead he does IDM, ambient, breakcore, and sometimes rather lengthy spoken word pieces. His style is really pretty sounding and he uses samples of speaking in a pretty unique way, hard to explain but you’ll know what I mean when you hear it. He sometimes rants over his music for performances.

His website is extremely hard to navigate since EVERYTHING moves and there’s a million links. Here are links to the pages that have music, just right click the links and click “save as”.

Here’s some videos of his performances. Sadly looks like a bunch of videos went down. One of the ones that went down was a street performance with an unknown girl that involved public masturbation, skirt flipping (on minors), and molestation; brilliant~! Really wish it was still on Youtube.

Yuuko Haii

I’ve been wanting to post about this scene ever since I started the blog but never got around to it, but now I finally am. What is the scene I’m talking about? The scene I’m talking about is the group of musicians, performance artists, poets, and painters who keep the passion for blending performance art and music that Japan had during the 80s alive. The first post about this scene will be about its most known artist, Yuuko Haii.

Yuuko Haii also goes as: YuukoHaii, Haiiyuuko, Haii Yuuko, Youko Heidy, Juuko Haii,  ゆー子廃い, 廃いゆー子, and probably more variations.

The genres they make are noise and Japanese sound poetry. Japanese sound poetry is actually just called sound poetry but I add the “Japanese” to differentiate it from other stuff. Its a cross between experimental music, poetry/ranting, and performance art. Common themes are sex, anti-money, and whatever will piss people off.

Yuuko Haii does both venue performances and as they call it, guerrilla performances. These are performances that take place in public places like intersections, subway trains, anywhere really. Their performances are often lots of ranting and yelling at people with or without a megaphone, but other common actions include: purposely getting arrested, fighting other performance artists, running at people with dildos, cutting them self (and sometimes feeding the blood to others or getting it on people), and bizarre actions like placing money in front of bathrooms.

They also have a good amount of releases on their own two labels as well as a number of various obscure netlabels. They also paint and have released CDrs with bizarre cases, like using an entire dress instead of a jewel case.
