Ojo Sembrono – JATHILAN • popular trance ritual from central Java

JATHILAN • popular trance ritual from central Java is a 2012 album by Ojo Sembrono on the sound collective/label Petites Planètes. I’m not sure if I’ve posted something from Petites Planètes before or not but they release a ton of world music. The album cover and title basically sums it up, bizarre ritual music from Java. The trance tho does not mean trance music, this is world music.

This album consists of two 29 minute tracks that are VERY similar. It’s mostly rhythm based, and that rhythm loops and loops through the whole album. This is the main body of the “trance” building. On top of the the percussion and melody is singing which sounds very foreign, it really has a good world music sound. This singing and sometimes chanting helps build the trance too and it sounds pretty cool.

This is a great and interesting album, download and listen for free here
